At The Moss Crew, we use a professional-grade treatment containing 50โ51% Benzalkonium Chloride, a highly effective quaternary ammonium compound (Quat) trusted throughout the cleaning and property maintenance industry for controlling moss, lichen, algae, mould and other organic growth.
Our treatment does not contain chlorine bleach. Unlike chlorine-based products, Benzalkonium Chloride works by targeting organic growth at its source without the strong odours and harsh effects often associated with bleach-based treatments.

What is moss, mould and lichen?
Moss is the green growth spreading across your roof. Mould is the black staining. Lichen is the tougher yellow or grey crust that grips into the surface. All three feed off moisture and slowly break your roof down.
Do I need separate treatments for moss, mould and lichen?

Will the treatment damage my roof?
No. Our treatment kills moss, mould, lichen and algae without harsh high-pressure blasting that can crack tiles or strip coatings. It works with the rain, not against your roof.
Is the treatment safe?
Yes. We use New Zealand made products applied by trained operators. We'll give you a few simple prep steps before we arrive so your property and plants are looked after.
How long does it take to work?
The roof looks the same the day we spray โ that's completely normal. Within a few weeks the moss starts dying. Over the next few months the rain washes the dead growth away. Most roofs are cler within 6 to 9 months, heavier ones 9 to 12.
Do I need to leave my property?
No, you can carry on as normal. Just disconnect your rainwater collection, move any vehicles clear, and make sure we can get around the property.
How often should it be done?
Most roofs need treating around every 3 years. We offer maintenance plans so you never have to think about it โ we'll check in and sort it before it becomes a problem.
Do you treat driveways, paths, decks and fences too?
Yes. The same treatment works on driveways, paths, decks and fences. We also do water blasting, gutter cleaning and house washing.
When is the best time to have a moss and lichen treatment carried out?
Any time of the year is a good time to have your roof treated. Our moss and lichen treatment can be applied year-round and will continue working after application, gradually killing moss, lichen, algae, mould, and mildew. The sooner the treatment is applied, the sooner the growth begins to die, helping protect your roof from further deterioration and moisture retention. Effective treatment can be carried out in any season.
What if it rained yesterday, or rain is forecast after the treatment?
That's perfectly fine. Our treatment only requires a short period to dry after application. Even if it rains 30 minutes later, the treatment will still continue to work effectively. In fact, light rain can help activate the treatment and carry it deeper into the moss and lichen, allowing it to start working straight away. This is why our treatments can be applied successfully throughout the year in a wide range of weather conditions.
